LPC at the Races: June in Review
June was a busy month for Team LPC at the races. The eyes of the triathlon world were focused on Vancouver on the June 7th weekend. Rain, high winds, and bitter cold water temps caused race organizers to convert the 1500m swim, to a 3k run, for the majority of the ITU World Triathlon Olympic Age Group Championships. Dennis Masse and Margaret Wojtowicz represented Canada and LPC proudly, and both had incredible experiences.
Despite chilly temps in Vancouver, LPC athletes Ralph Iannitelli and Shelley McKee were greeted with a sweltering heat wave in Maryland. Shelley endured 40+ temps during 70.3 Eagleman. Two weeks later, Shelley complemented her performance in the half with a 3rd place result in her age group at the Maumee Bay Olympic Triathlon. Shelley is gearing up for Ironman Louisville on Aug 31. Ralph finished in a very strong 5:05. Ralph qualified for the 70.3 World Champs earlier this year at 70.3 St. Croix.
The heat wave carried over to London, which featured the Lakeside Tri. Keith Henry and Jim Cooke had great results. Keith has showed remarkable improvement in all three disciplines. The following weekend, Keith completed his first Olympic Tri in Pontiac Michigan. Keith is progressing quickly through the big triathlon learning curve, and is now setting his sights on 70.3 Steelhead in early Aug.
Travis Goron finished 5th overall at the Leamington Sprint Tri. Travis recently finished his second last year of high school with a 95% average, and had a solid week of training at the Provincial Triathlon Centre in Guelph, before leaving for two big upcoming races in Manitoba and Quebec.
Shauna Carter competed in her first ever triathlon in Leamington. The very next weekend, she finished the Guelph Sprint Triathlon. Shauna is hooked, and has many more races on the menu.
Also taking part in the Guelph Triathlon was Helen Robertson, who completed her first Olympic Triathlon. This was an important stepping stone for 'Robbo', who will be taking part in Steelhead 70.3 on Aug 3rd. Margaret Wojtowicz, and son Rob, also had stellar races. Rob smashed the bike course with a normalized power of 341 watts.
Jane MacLeod dominated her age group at the Muskoka Long Course Triathlon, and qualified for IMUSA on July 20th. Tim Zippel also had a great race, and will also be gearing up for IMUSA. It was a productive weekend for Jim Cooke, who finished 2nd in the 60-64 age group of the Muskoka Sprint. Less than 14 hours later, he toed the start line of the HSBC Binbrook Tri, and won his age category.
Team LPC now enters the heart of the racing season. Several LPC athletes will be present at the Loaring Triathlon on July 19th.
Below lists the competitions that Team LPC members will be participating in the month of July.
