SEMINAR OUTLINE

Establishing a plan for your race-day hydration and nutrition can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you are new to the sport or taking on a new distance. There are many questions, and seemingly few straight answers. But being a good detective is all aboutknowing the right questions to ask according to your own situation. This talk will provide you with up-to-date, research-based evidence and practical advice to help you on your way. We'll also discuss how to use that information based on your own individual goals and preferences, so when the big race finally shows up, you'll be ready. Here are some questions we'll consider:

WHAT are the major aspects of hydration and nutrition during exercise?
  - What is the best hydration strategy? What kind of energy should you be taking in, and how much do you need? What role do electrolytes and caffeine play?

WHY does this stuff matter?
  - Practical, research-based evidence: Why some of the stuff you've heard is true, and why some of it is not.

WHO needs to worry about what?
  - Who should be more concerned with hydration, and who should worry more about energy intake? Who shouldn't worry too much about any of it?

WHEN should you drink more? When should you eat less?
  - How long you're out there for, how hot it is, and how you're feeling can change how you fuel.

HOW the heck do you put it all together?
  - Making hydration and nutrition a part of your training will give you the confidence to handle any race-day situation!

ABOUT BROOKE

As a Registered Dietitian, with a Masters in Applied Human Nutrition and a Sports Nutrition Diploma from the Medical Commission of the International Olympic Committee, I've had success as an Ironman distance triathlete, applying both theories and practice-based knowledge, to achieve optimal performance.

In 2010, I qualified at Ironman Cozumel for Ironman Hawaii with a race time of 10:08. I was second amateur female and ninth overall. Of female amateur competitors, I had the fastest bike split. Last October, in Kona, I improved my PR by eight minutes finishing in 10:00:03 on a more challenging course (topography, climate & mental). Finishing 6th in my age-group, I was super pleased with my performance, as I was 11th amateur & 29th overall on my debut Kona race! This year, I have significant goals and aspirations, as I begin to realize my potential in the sport. I will be spending the spring in Tucson, Arizona, with hopes of chasing my dreams in 2012!
